Article Abstract:

A temporary growth slowdown in 1996 gave Singaporeans a hint of the potential fragility of their material wellbeing. Seasonally adjusted figures revealed that Singapore had no GDP growth for two quarters, according to UBS Singapore economist Prasenjit K. Basu. Especially troubling was an electronics sector downturn. An unexpectedly strong fourth quarter, however, boosted GDP growth for the year to 7%.
