Article Abstract:
Alessi (Crusinallo, Italy) has become one of the most influential arbiters of contemporary design outside of the furniture industry. The firm has produced works by big-name designers such as Achille Castiglioni and Richard Sapper and adopted a cross-border strategy under which designers and manufacturers can collaborate. This strategy was exemplified by Alessi's line of eleven Tea and Coffee Piazzas, introduced in 1983. These unusual architectural reinterpretations of traditional tea and coffee service may be revisited by Alessi for a new generation of designs. Article provides a brief history of the company from its founding in 1921.

Imu, a young Helsinki, Finland-based design collective founded in 2002 is scheduled to have its first US solo show at The Future Perfect, a trendy design boutique in Brooklyn, New York. The show will present old and new designs between May 11 and June 22, 2006, including co-founder Saara Renvall's flower-shaped Kukka brooch and Klaus Aalto's Stereo tables.

Folklore characters of Iceland, called huldufolk or 'hidden people', inspire Iceland's design industry to incorporate them in crafts, fashions and products. Modern-day huldufolk charms, fashion garments by Steinunn and ceramic pieces by Kristin Gardarsdottir, are created based on the theme of huldufolk.
