Corporate law firms from north west England have undergone changes which are likely to continue as more multi-disciplinary practices open. Family firms have been prompted to sell as the UK general election of 1997 approached, in case their tax position was changed. It is unclear whether such activity levels can continue after the election. The largest law firm in north west England was created from the merger of Dibb Lupton Broomhead with Alsop Wilkinson, ranking seventh in the UK as a whole.

Manchester ranks second in the United Kingdom after the capital, London, in providing this type of advice. There is concern that insurance companies could set up their own legal departments and deal with this activity in house. This means that law firms have to show they can offer good value.
