NWF: under pressure

Article Abstract:

NWF was previously called North Western Farmer's Co-op, and has reported a staedy growth in profits. These may be affected by a number of factors such as mad cow disease in 1996 to 1997, but the company still appears solid. Feedstuff distribution accounts for some 40% of profits, groceries distribution accounts for a further 40%, and marketing and distribution of fuels is the company's third activity. There was a drop of 17% in the UK feedstuff market in 1996 but the company has increased its stake in the market.

WH Smith

Article Abstract:

WH Smith has completed a restructuring process which has included disposals like Virgin Our Price. The company is able to focus on supply chain improvements and the core brand of WHS. The company's stock price has been affected by concern about the entry of Wal-Mart into the United Kingdom, but the two companies offer different product ranges. Stationery, books and magazines are key high-margin areas which have helped to push up profits. The acquisition of Hodder headline should help book sales and the company's internet offer.
