Mirror makes the most of its breathing space

The United Kingdom Competition Commission has sent its findings on the plans of Trinity and Regional Independent Media (RIM) to acquire Mirror, to Stephen Byers, Trade and Industry Secretary of State. The company's stock price has risen since RIM and later Trinity made bids for Mirror. The appointment of John Allwood as chief executive has been popular with the City, and Allwood has refocused Mirror, selling an 18.6% stake in Scottish Media. The delay in the acquisition plans has stengthened Mirror, and Mirror stockholders should ensure that new bids appreciate Mirror's value.

There has been concern about predatory pricing in the United Kingdm newspaper market, yet price competition, including selling at a loss, are often seen as legitimate. There is concern that a national UK newspaper, the Independent, could disappear, but if this does happen it is not necessarily because of the price war. News Corp was originally thought to be mistaken in cutting prices since it was beleived that demand would not increase, but lower prices have pushed up sales.
