Article Abstract:

Bank holding companies (BHCs) involved in regional compacts are generally more profitable, have higher quality loan portfolios and depend more on core deposits than BHCs not party to such compacts. This is gleaned from a study of the Supreme Court's decision to allow states to enter into regional reciprocal compacts. Such alliances seem to be associated with relatively strong BHCs and shareholders view the interstate banking opportunities opened by the Supreme Court to be consistent with their interests.
