Article Abstract:

Jim Balsillie became a partner in wireless data communications firm Research in Motion after losing his job as executive vice president and chief financial officer of technology contractor Sutherland-Schultz in 1992. Balsillie's investment in the company has paid off with sales rising to $20 million from $1 million in 1992. Balsillie has also received the Ontario High Technology Entreprenur of the Year award.

'Tis the season to be ... maxxed out

Article Abstract:

A June 1996 study showed that 38% of Canadians have outstanding balances on their credit cards while 49% of those with balances say that their debts increased since 1993. About 29% respondents claim to have difficulty paying off their credit cards due to job loss while another 14% cite job relocation. Experts also attribute the rising debt of Canadians to stagnant wages coupled with high taxes.

New breed of credit card taking over

Article Abstract:

Financial institutions have started to offer low-rate credit cards in Canada. The lower rates, ranging from 9.23% to 14% as compared to regular rates of 16.5% to 18.9%, are aimed at serving credit card holders who carry substantial monthly balances. The low-rate credit cards are also in keeping with the plans of financial institutions to diversify their products.
