Making mission statements count

Article Abstract:

The effectiveness of mission statements greatly depends on the process by which the statement is developed. In developing mission statements, the involvement of stakeholders are to be considered since research shows that their involvement are more likely to result in the creation of a mission that has positive effect on various organizational outcome measures. The development of mission statements should also consider the use of a style in which senior managers simply dictate the end product.

Corporate boards of directors are viewed as obsessively wanting to know the company's financial position instead of seeing the changes taking place within the organizations status. Directors are uninformed about implementation and quality of corporate strategies, and do not have agreement and/or the competence of the strategy concept.
