Lottery hits charity funding

Article Abstract:

The UK National Lottery has affected levels of donations to UK charities and no funds have yet been distributed by the National Lotteries Charities Board which is saving the funds in a National Lottery Distribution Fund. The lottery has been more successful than was envisaged but its impact has yet to be measured precisely. The government may change the lottery's structure if it is shown to have a major long term impact on UK charities. This could involve a reduction in taxes to increase funds received by the National Lotteries Charities Board.

Article Abstract:

Changes affecting UK charity fund managers include a planned review of the 1961 Trustee Investment Act by the UK Treasury. The Trustee Law Committee and the Law Commission will be involved in this review. Equities may become more important for the portfolios of charity funds. Inflation is a problem for charities since their assets can be eroded. Loose monetary policy is thus cause for concern, though some fund managers see inflation as less of a problem in the 1990s.

Article Abstract:

The UK National Lottery distributes some 1.4 billion pounds sterling annually through five good causes bodies. Some bodies will only fund capital projects, or require matching funds. Additional funds are not always easy to obtain. Cash may be unused because of problems raising additional funds, and projects may not be completed. The Association of Charitable Foundations argues that there is a case for funding the whole of projects if they are seen as worthwhile.
