Accountant Bob Brown has been providing tax and financial consulting services to Canada's First Nations for 15 years. He has been assisting Native American communities in land claim negotiations, corporate acquisitions and business development. Recruited by KPMG in 1994 to develop its aboriginal practice, Brown now serves as the national director for the company's Aboriginal Services Group. It has been pursuing a number of initiatives to help improve Canada's aboriginal community, including a scholarship program and a program for boosting the number of KPMG recruits from the First Nations.

Ghanaian-born chartered accountant Kofi Hadjor has carved out a comfortable niche by handling the tax preparation needs of clients who work in the arts, fashion and entertainment communities. A graduate of the University of Guelph and the University of Windsor, Hadjor began his accounting training at Delloite & Touche where he spent six years before he set out on his own. In 1986, he set up Creative Arts Tax Services, which now bills some $400,000 a year for financial and tax planning advice given to clients in the arts community of Toronto, Canada.

Public accountants are increasingly offering management consulting services. At Canada's Big Six accounting firms, consultations already account for almost 60% of revenues, with management consulting comprising less than 20%. In the 1980s, the opposite was true as consultative activities consisted of 40% of their revenues while auditing, their traditional money-earner, accounted for 60%. The increasing share of management consulting in the revenues of accounting firms reflect the growing shift in their mix of services.
