The discovery of traces of LLRICE-601, an unapproved genetically modified rice variant, in US exports has put the spotlight on the failure of biotech companies to fully contain field trials and on government's inability to keep the food supply free of unapproved traits. The LLRICE-601 case is expected to increase pressure to tighten regulation of field trials and screen imported crops for unknown genetic modifications.

Biotech lobbyists in Europe have started to push governing bodies of the European Union to harmonize and relax laws on preemption rights. Paul Myners, chairman of Marks & Spencer is planning to publish a report on whether the UK should relax its rules on shareholders' preemption rights to help biotech companies raise cash by issuing new shares without the need for approval of existing shareholders.

Nanomedicines are still facing hurdles related to lack of an inadequate funding structure and to potential difficulties in gaining regulatory approval in Europe was reported by European Science Foundation. Those with experience in developing such type of nanomedicines argue that any safe and effective nanomedicine would make market without the need for additional regulations.
