Kicked into touch

Article Abstract:

The future of professional rugby looks bleak. The high salaries bestowed to players, the support of prominent businessmen and a television broadcasting agreement with Sky seem to indicate the professionalism of the sport. However, there are problems that need to be fixed to ensure its survival. Foremost of these is the excessive costs that clubs have to bear as a result of the high salaries of players, which are out of proportion to turnover. Another problem is the disorganized fixtures list. Clubs typically begin the season, compete in the European games, shed players to the international teams and then resume competition in club games. If this messy schedule is restructured, there is a possibility of renewed supporter base, which is currently lacking. The recruitment of a marketing manager can also help increase the popularity of teams.

The grapes of Rothbury

Article Abstract:

Rothbury Wines is one of small, independent wine producers that are leading Australia's growing reputation as a provider of fine wine to all points of the world. Located in the Lower Hunter Valley, which is just two hours' drive from Sydney, Rothbury has displayed phenomenal ascendance in the world of wine-making. Established only in the late 1960s, the small company has produced 500,000 cases and amassed A$1.7 million in 1995. Over the years, the company has achieved growth through the acquisition of Saltram and St. Huberts, addition of a New Zealand vineyard, and leasing of another in Mudgee. However, larger companies are threatening to take over Rothbury. It has already survived takeover attempts by BRL Hardy and Mildara Blass. It remains to be seen whether it can fend off other similar attempts in the future.
