High margin products promise to relieve the pain of opiates

Article Abstract:

Meconic is the largest supplier world wide of opium as a pain killer, and almost holds a monopoly in the United Kingdom. The company's stock price dropped after it issued a profit warning in Sep 1997. Meconic's other products include Bitrex, which makes slug bait and anti-freeze unattractive to pets and children, and bromonitromethane, used in a new antibiotic. Meconic also makes galantamine, and ingredient for an Alzheimer's treatment, and raw material supply problems with this product was part of the reason for the profit warning.
