Chartered accountants (CAs) are discovering that belonging to the accountancy profession is not a guarantee against unemployment. Unemployed accountants, victims of adverse economic conditions, can expect to meet difficulties in in their attempts to find work. One is the varying degrees of professionalism possessed by companies and recruitment agencies. Some are quick to respond to applications while others do not even respond. A more considerable obstacle to finding employment is age discrimination, which is apparent in the low age limits specified in most job advertisements. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) is helping unemployed CAs by offering them forthnightly workshops, reduced subscription to the ICAS and lowered fees for PQE courses. The ICAS Careers and Advisory Service also provides additional services.

The results of a survey of Scottish accounting students are discussed. One hundred and thirty-two students preparing for the Chartered Accountant (CA) exam responded to questions about their educational background, the nature of accounting, the accounting curriculum, non-accounting, and future expectations. Most of the participants were the products of state educations. The respondents viewed communication skills, commercial awareness, and technical knowledge as the most important accounting skills. The students did not show an awareness of disciplines related to accounting such as economics and data processing. Most were undecided about their career choices after qualifying as CAs.

Job opportunities and factors to be considered by British accountants thinking about working abroad are discussed. The best time to take an overseas assignment is shortly after qualification as a Chartered Accountant. Recruitment for overseas jobs is done year round, but the peak time of year is spring and early summer. Worthwhile work experiences are available in less developed countries as well as highly developed economies such as the US, Canada, and Hong Kong. The amount of money saved during an overseas assignment will depend as much upon the individual's ability to save and the accommodations provided as on the salary offered.
