Ghost of Dowty

Ultra Electronics was set up following the acquisition of Dowty by TI which sold surplus small plants in the UK to management. The company which was set up in this way produces parts for producers of military and other aircraft and marine vessels, including command systems. The company's turnover has risen by a fifth since 1993 when it was sold, and is almost 100 million pounds sterling. The company is seeking a market capitalization of some 120 million pounds sterling for its flotation.

Airbus seeks a friend

Article Abstract:

Aerospatiale and Lockheed Martin are holding co-operation talks which would bring another stage of reorganization in the world defense industry. Aerospatiale is a major partner in Airbus Industrie which would benefit from an alliance with Lockheed in developing its 550-seat airliner. Airbus calculates that it would cost $8 billion to develop the new aircraft generation, though other estimates put the cost as high as $16 billion. Airbus also plans to become a joint stock company.

Derby builds on engineering strengths

Article Abstract:

Derby is an English city with some 220,000 inhabitants and a tradition of engineering. This has led to an increase in unemployment when engineering firms have been hit by recession. Rolls-Royce has had to shed jobs in the region due to depression in world airline markets. ABB has reduced jobs in its railroad engineering business. Meanwhile, Toyota has built a new plant south of Derby, and some 10% of the labor force works in research and development occupations.
