Get ready for consolidation among the regionals

Article Abstract:

Allied Domecq is to sell restaurants and pubs to Whitbread, which in turn is to sell brewing activities. Whitbread would prefer a demerger, though it is possible that a major brewer from abroad could make a bid. United Kingdom brewers and pub operators are likely to see a process of consolidation, and this applies especially to regional companies. There are a large number of these regional companies with family holdings that are strong enough to prevent a rapid pace of consolidation.

Regionals play to their strengths

Article Abstract:

The number of regional brewers in the UK has dropped, but there are still strong players in this market. Greene King is a brewer specialising in real ale which has also acquired the Magic Pub company, to be run separately. Pub operating companies present a threat to regional brewers since they have been able to locate good sites and run their pubs well.
