Germany and Japan focus on the product

Article Abstract:

The success of Japanese and German industry is largely attributable to the development of management cultures that stress continuous quality improvement through constant innovation. The emphasis placed on maintaining customer satisfaction through the attainment of high levels of quality is another characteristic of the best Japanese and German companies. Other factors that have made Japanese and German industry so successful are high labor productivity, an emphasis on training, and macroeconomic policies that have produced a favorable business environment. UK companies, in sharp contrast, have lagged behind since they have tended to emphasize short-term financial results, rather than long-term improvements in performance based on training, innovation and customer satisfaction. The preeminence of accountants in senior management is a reflection of the mistaken focus placed by UK firms on short-term performance.
