Follow the leader? Adoption behavior in food retailers' decision to offer fresh irradiated ground beef

Article Abstract:

The use of ionizing radiation to reduce pathogens and thus help extend the shelf life of red meat products in the US was authorized in February 2000 and several US supermarkets commenced the sale of fresh irradiated ground beef under their own labels. The factors that influenced the supermarkets to sell such beef are examined and among other reasons the fact of a competitor doing so as well as his proximity increased the likelihood of a store's adoption of irradiated ground beef.

Food safety approaches to examining HACCP costs and performance and technologies

Article Abstract:

The survey methodology needed to obtain data for the support of several empirical analyses dealing with food safety issues is studied. This method yielded nearly one thousand responses from meat and poultry plants on their costs of compliance with the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) rule of 1996, plant characteristics and use of food safety technologies and practices.

A model of consumer herd behavior to explain the popularity of the low-carb diets in the United States that was developed and used is discussed. The effect of media frenzy and low-carb food prices on the popularity of the low-carb diets is estimated.
