Export fiddles and retirement scams

Article Abstract:

The latest report of the European court of Auditors has uncovered fraud in export refund subsidies, the collection of customs duties, and among the payment of invalidity pensions to European Community civil servants. The examination of export refunds and customs duties only covered beefmeat in Germany, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, yet widespread fraud was discovered. The report stated that Customs has not inspected goods to verify subsidy classifications, has not checked to verify that produce has left the Economic Community, and has not verified the authenticity of proof of delivery notices. The Court's report also found that the European Community has grossly overpaid pensions to as many as 90% of retirees.

Article Abstract:

A 1988 study of the 12 major international accounting firms in Europe by the Center for Transnational Accounting and Financial Research reveals that between 1982 and 1987, the number of partners in the firms in Europe increased 42.3%. Research also shows that Coopers and Lybrand grew by 77.2% and was the fastest-growing firm in Europe, but the merger of KMG and Peat Marwick (KPMG) resulted in it garnering the designation as the largest firm in Europe.
