Commercial Banks do not lend to the poor in order to take them out of poverty, but to the rich in order to make them richer, and only those who have collateral are deemed creditworthy. One of the most successful microfinancial institutions, the Grameen Bank (GB) started in the village of Jobra in Bangladesh in 1976 by lending $27 to a group of 52 people, focuses almost exclusively on lending to women who make up 96% of the bank's members, as experience has shown that women are more reliable borrowers.

Arts & Business was established in 1976 to help businesses become involved in sponsoring the arts, and since its inception the annual business investment in art in the UK has risen from 600,000 pounds to 141 million pounds. Art sponsorship is cost-effective and can be used as a highly visible and valuable strategic marketing tool, and can promote a company's name, enhance its image, and improve its community relations.
