Electronic mail

Article Abstract:

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) provides members with electronic mail services, on a subscription basis, through a contract with Telecom Gold. The basics of sending messages to others within the mailbox system, checking mailboxes for messages with the use of modems, and verifying whether messages sent have been received by others are described, and the advantages of electronic mail systems over conventional mail or telephone systems are identified. In Scotland there are approximately 100,000 users of electronic mail, indicating that the technology has not been widely accepted. Consequently, the ICAS-Telecom Gold system has linked electronic mail to the national Telex system, so that subscribers can send messages to non-subscribing companies and individuals who have Telex lines. Subscribers to the ICAs-Telecom Gold system are also advised: to install dedicated telephonelines for their modems, to ensure the integrity of data transmissions; to purchase communications software, to simplify communicating with the centralized mailbox computer; and to purchase stand-alone or circuit-board modems that communicate at baud rates recognized as standard within Scotland.

Moving up a megabyte

Article Abstract:

A major review of the strategy of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland revealed a serious need for updated information systems that would improve the management of the institute's affairs. The two areas that were found to require improvement were the financial systems and the membership database. The Tetra Chameleon Software was installed to solve the first problem, while solving the second one has become a three-part project. It involved holding current membership records on a historical basis, holding these same data for all members, and collecting and storing new member information.
