Don't be afraid: it's only a machine

Article Abstract:

Modems form a crucial component of modern communications systems. They provide the channel through which computers send and receive communications from each other. Without modems, access to the information superhighway would not be possible. Without them, online database service would also be unlikely to flourish. Not surprisingly, modems have become an essential business communications tool, one that requires careful evaluation before purchase. Among the features that prospective buyers must consider when selecting modems are the speed of communication possible, the type of error correction used and the kind of data compression technology applied. These features are tyically decided by the standards used by a particular modem. These standards range from the V.29 standard used by Group 3 fax machines, the V.22bis standard used by low-end modems, the V.32 standard that allows simultaneous send receive and the V.32bis standard that is the fastest available.

Wired to the future?

Article Abstract:

The traditional relationship between professional organizations and their members is changing due to the rapid pace of the information technology revolution. Given the changing relationship between employers and employees, the latter will inevitably turn to their professional organizations for their needs that were previously met by their employers. As with other professionals, accountants are likely to consider their relationship with their accounting bodies as their primary, long-term working relationship, and not the relationship that they have with their companies. Accounting organizations will therefore be compelled to improve their services as well as the manner in which they are delivered. In the case of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, it is already offering better communication channels through the Internet. The flow of information is expected to improve further with more technological innovations.

The pioneers who lost their way

Article Abstract:

Accountants used to be pioneers in the use of information technology (IT) back in the days when it only involved data processing and number crunching. Today, however, when IT is widely recognized in the business community as an important tool for disseminating information, accountants are lagging behind the use of technology. Accounting firms were recently surveyed to determine the extent of IT usage in the UK. The results reveal that more than 50% of the respondents have a modem, but only a third of them use the device to communicate electronically with their clients. The majority, about 66% of those who have modems, use these devices to communicate with outside information services. These findings suggest that only a small number of accountancy practices use electronic communication to exchange information. The survey also found that over 50% of the respondents did not have any disaster recovery plan.
