Czech agriculture has troubles with old age and equipment

Article Abstract:

Czech Republic: The share of agriculture in the Czech economy is decreasing. There are 210,000 employees in the agricultural sector currently, 50,000 less compared to 1995. The number decreased in spite of the fact that statisticians considered some producers, who had a lack of lands and animals and were not included in this category in 1995, as agrarians in harmony with the methodology of the European Union. There is a small percentage of young people in the sector. The agricultural sector includes 10,000 agrarians aged between 18-24 years and 33,000 persons between 50-54 years. The area of arable land is decreasing. The share of arable land in all agricultural land has decreased from 80% to 75%. The share decreased to the benefit of forests or sodded areas. This trend should go on. Agriculture generates 2.1% of Gross Domestic Product in the EU compared to 5% in the Czech Republic currently. Czech agrarians have out-of-date technical equipment. About 90% of all local tractors and lorries are older than eight years. The data is based on the survey of Agrocensus (Czech Republic).
