Millions of pounds sterling are donated to political parties by UK quoted companies each year, with nearly all these donations going to the Conservative party. The Labor party received donations from only three listed companies, two of which also give money to the Conservative party. The amount given has dropped from 3 million pounds sterling in 1992 to 1.6 million pounds in 1995. Shareholders should be informed about why companies decide to make donations to a political party, and critics argue that they should also be allowed to vote on this issue.

UK carpet and furniture stores have seen a drop in their share price since sales have not been as strong as expected. A revival in the housing market was forecast which was expected to boost sales of carpets and furniture. House prices are rising in SE England and London but are dropping or stable elsewhere. There is also political uncertainty due to the 1997 election, after which interest rates are expected to rise. This rise is likely to affect demand and increase retailers' costs.
