Britannic Assurance deals with the mass market where customers are likely to be affected by higher costs resulting from tighter regulations in the industry. The company has boosted new business but this tends to be in areas where there are narrow margins such as performance bonds. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is studying the issue of orphan assets which mainly consist of unclaimed policy money. The possibility of this being distributed to shareholders has increased interest in the company's shares.

The Prudential is preparing for changes in the UK insurance industry such as increased regulatory pressure. The company has been reducing its costs and trying out new products with greater flexibility and lower charges. This should give the company an edge in competition. The UK insurance industry has been affected by revelations of poor selling of pensions which have resulted in compensation claims. The Prudential will be affected by this problem but it should have little effect on its share price.
