Banks are beginning to use new methods to determine credit risk as commercial lending volume surges upward, totalling $1 trillion in 1997. Management goals and human resource issues are being scrutinized along with more traditional processes such as debt-to-equity ratios. Banks are also switching their focus from balance sheets to cash flows to assess leverage.

Several mergers have reduced its status in Europe's banking industry and officials anticipate a $2.1 billion write-off for losses due to the Asian financial crisis and restructuring costs. It has, however, adopted the euro currency structure to draw cash management clients.
