The Royal Australian Navy: on course for the 21st century

Article Abstract:

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) played a key role during the peacekeeping operations in East Timor. The RAN has seen its resources stretched thinly due to various other demands including illegal drug activity, immigration and commercial fishing. Its primary goal is to maintain an assured capability to detect and attack any major surface ships and prevent hostile submarine operations in Australia's extended maritime borders.
