April Greiman

Article Abstract:

April Greiman is United States' renowned graphic designer, who invented the collage-based West Coast aesthetic that now shows up in US postage stamps. Investigating various imaging technologies, Greiman was one of the first contemporary designers to break from the linear logic of the modern. Her focus is on postmodern physics that acknowledges chaos, speed and the extrapolation of ideas across dimensions, and on postmodern biology that acknowledges intelligence in the body. Her book 'From the Center: Faculty Design Process at Sci-Arc' shows her optimistic attitudes.

On overcoming modernism

Article Abstract:

The worldwide social and cultural upheavals of the 1990's have sent Modernists into a greater identity crisis, partly because their dogmatic, puritanical approach had earlier been considered questionable by the emergence of post-Modernism. Ironically, Modernists are also confused by the necessity for digital technology, despite its breathing life into design and logically extending El Lissitzky's concepts. Thus, they are criticized for reviving irrelevant questions regarding quality, and for not accepting change.
