Article Abstract:
The Airborne Laser (ABL) program, developing a laser system aboard a Boeing 747 capable of knocking down enemy missiles in their boost phase of flight, is proving successful, and is also leading the way for directed-energy weapons in 2006. As a directed-energy system and as an airborne system, ABL is uniquely able to address all classes of ballistic missiles in the boost phase and the program has enjoyed two good years of success.

The chief of a top Washington defense think tank is questioning the strategic and technical underpinnings of the Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) that has come under sharp scrutiny. Andrew Krepinevich, executive director of the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA), has questioned about the underlying focus of the future force, where FCS is the central element.

A well-known US defense analyst stated that advanced surveillance systems were likely to be big winners in the 2005 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). He mentioned that the three systems Space Radar, an improved Global unmanned aerial vehicle and a joint electronic aircraft stood out as 'must haves' for the US Military.
