A tiger for the West's tank?

Article Abstract:

Poland is poised to become northern Europe's economic tiger. Although it still has a long way to go to catch up with Asia's tiger economies, the country's shift to capitalism has made it the fastest growing economy in all of Europe. Its economic achievements are quite impressive. The government has succeeded in bringing down inflation from nearly 1,100% in the early 1990s to just 30% in 1994. By 1995, inflation was down to 25%, the growth rate was 6.5%, the debt-GDP ratio was 14.5% and unemployment remained steady at 14.5%. In addition, Poland's small business sector is thriving even with little government support and the inadequacy of the most basic business tools. The impressive performance of the Polish economy has not gone unnoticed in the West. Foreign investors are pouring into the country, with the biggest of them coming from the US and Germany. The modernization of the Polish State Railway, Polski Koleje Panstowe, is discussed.
