Article Abstract:
An empirical examination of the career advances achieved by corporate women in the boardroom was conducted. Data on Fortune 500 firms were gathered from corporate proxy reports for two time periods, 1987 and 1996. Findings revealed significant progress for women in terms of their presence on corporate boards and their roles on these boards. The number of board seats occupied by women increased from 270 in 1987 to 602 in 1996. Moreover, the number of women with corporate experience and resource dependence linkages also increased. However, no progress was observed in chief executive positions and this trend is not expected to change anytime soon. There were only a few women occupying inside directorship, a position filled by people just before they are selected as chief executives. No increase in this number was also observed in the 10-year period covered.
