The date of the UK Budget appears to affect share price performance, though there is little evidence that a November Budget means that share prices perform better in that month. Meanwhile a correction is expected in share prices in the UK and US. UK share prices are influenced by those of the US and a major fall in the UK does not appear likely to some analysts unless US prices drop. US share prices tend not to perform well in the year after a president is elected a second time, so US prices could see a correction in 1997.

October has tended to be a profitable month for UK investors despite a popular belief that bull markets tend to end in a crash in October. This is less true of the UK where sharp rises in share prices in the first three quarters of a year often end in falls in October. An exception to this trend occurred in 1958 when prices rose after a drop in 1957. Share prices fell in 1994, and investors hope that 1995 could be another year which is an exception to the trend.

Share prices fell in Oct 1929 and Oct 1987 but despite these crashes, share prices rise in October more often than they fall. Prices tend to rise more at the start of the month, but the 9th Oct and 10th Oct are often poor days for trading. Meanwhile the Coppock Indicator, developed by Edwin Coppock, showed a warning in Jun 1996, and a downturn often follows some four months after a warning. This could mean that share prices will drop at the end of Oct 1996.
