Article Abstract:
Glaxo shares have been affected by concern over a patent expiry in the US for Zantac, the company's ulcer treatment. Stockbrokers are divided in their views on Glaxo shares. NatWest Securities sees Glaxo's shares as fairly priced, while James Capel argues that they are overvalued, and Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull advises investors to buy the shares in Feb 1995. Nikko Europe argues for a hold, and sees possible cost reduction, but there should be evidence that Wellcome, for which Glaxo has made a bid, will be integrated into the group.

Glaxo Wellcome has warned that earnings growth will be subdued in the two years from 1997, but this could change in 1999. Four analysts from a sample of six rate the company's shares a buy and two rate them a hold. The buyers are BZW, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Societe Generale Strauss Turnbull. Goldman Sachs does not see US sales of Zantac as likely to fall by as much as Glaxo's worst forecasts. The holders are Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers.
