Accrual response to mandated accounting principles: the case of SFAS Nos. 2 and 34

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate whether and under what conditions managers used discretionary accruals to maximize their bonuses as they were affected by the implementation of SFAS Nos. 2 and 34. In addition, the study analyzed if managers' timing of their adoption of mandatory accounting principle (MAP) is a factor in their successful response to MAP. The results show that managers time their adoption of the MAP based on their ability to offset the effect of the MAP on their bonuses.

The demographic challenge and the policy response

Article Abstract:

A report released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development as of Jun 1998 presented the policy-making challenges for ageing populations. Reforms should provide for the maintenance of their quality of life without placing a burden on the younger generation. Balance should be maintained in the living standards of the young and the old. Strategies have to be developed for pension funds which may not have enough to finance the retirement of an aging employee.
