Turbulence at U.S. loan agency

The Small Business Administration lending program went bankrupt and was restored within days, but with restrictions including a lower lending limit. The agency is criticized for misguiding its funding needs where a lenders group fears a crisis is brewing because loan demand at an annual rate of $12 billion is outpacing the $9.5 billion, the program is authorized to lend for 2004.

Rules on market timing to change

Article Abstract:

The members of Securities and Exchange Commission voted unanimously to adopt rules requiring fund companies to detail their market timing policies in sales material and other documents given to shareholders. The new rules are the latest in a series of sweeping changes to mutual fund operations that are intended to boost investor confidence.

N.J. travels tobacco road to raise cash

Article Abstract:

The state of New Jersey is selling bonds based on its expectations of funds from the tobacco industry. The tax-free bonds will raise $3.5 billion, but the state would have collected a total of $7.5 billion over 25 years. Several other states and territories have also sold similar bonds to collect the settlement money earlier.
