American Home has $7.5 billion charge; it needed additional funds in the 4th quarter to cover costs of suits over diet pills, the drug maker said

American Home Products Corp. has settled 40,000 claims against it for problems from using its diet drugs, suits dating back to 1997. The company has another 10,000 claims to settle. Thus, it is taking a $7.5 billion charge in order to fund these settlements. The drugs involved are Pondimin or Redux and phentermine.
