Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation reportedly owes $497 million to its unsecured creditors, which include product suppliers, as well another $605 million to its bondholders. The health-care organization may have debts to as much as 80,000 creditors, according to a spokesperson with the company.

The Allegheny health system has obtained positive rating from the inspection of Allegheny University Hospital/Hahneman in Center City, PA. The surprise inspection was made by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The survey is aimed to prove if Allegheny's financial problem has not affected the health care's patient service, according to the national commission's spokeswoman Janet McIntyre. The inspection also determines the health care's capacity to provide quality patient care despite its financial problems, she added.

The future of the Allegheny health system will finally be known in nine days after 11 months of financial troubles. Four potential buyers have already made an intent to acquire the system's eight hospitals in Southeastern Pennsylvania. If the plan succeeds, bids will be brought to US Bankruptcy Court Judge M. Bruce McCullough's court. Once approved, an auction will be held in McCullough's courtroom in Pittsburgh, PA. The winning bidders will be given until Oct. 21, 1998, to complete the acquisition.
