Warminster, PA-based OraPharma Inc. has just financed the development of a new antibiotic treatment for periodontal disease. The drug is currently undergoing Phase III clinical trials. The company wants to file a New Drug Application with the FDA before the end of 1999, and then launch it on the market by early 2001. OraPharma calls its product a minocycline periodontal therapeutic system. The drug is made up of an antibiotic imbedded in small polymer balls.

MedImmune Inc. has agreed to produce three million doses of its FluMist spray flu vaccine in 2005 with the encouragement of federal health officials. However, it is estimated that the company would be able to sell only about one million doses due to its inability to persuade Americans to adopt a nasal spray alternative to the standard flu shot.

Shares of Merck & Co. Inc, one of the world's largest drugmaker has declined more than 10% on November 1, 2004 after its withdrawal of its arthritis drug, Vioxx due to lawsuits filed against the company over Vioxx. Vioxx was consumed by about 20 million Americans and had produced 11 percent of Merck's total revenue.
