2 city law firms may merge into largest in state

Article Abstract:

Blank, Rome, Comisky & McCauley and Cozen & O'Conner, two law offices based in Philadelphia, announced that they are engaged in merger negotiations. If the proposed merger is concluded, the merged entity will have a staff of 590 attorneys. This would make it the largest law firm in Philadelphia as well as in the state of Pennsylvania. Officials from both firms said that there would be no immediate layoffs because of the planned merger. Blank Rome primarily handles business practices, labor law, and bankruptcies. Cozen & O'Conner handles litigation in the insurance and commercial fields.

A need for skilled workers cited

Article Abstract:

The chairman of the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Manufacturers, Calvin Campbell Jr., has said that highly skilled workers are needed in the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing jobs comprise about five percent of the total workforce in the U.S. and about two percent in the Philadelphia area. The trade association is working with vocational programs and community colleges to create more trained manufacturing workers.

Northeast Phila. to get 15-screen movie house. (General Cinema Theatres building 15 -screen theater in Northeast Philadelphia)

Article Abstract:

General Cinema Theaters starts construction work next month on a 80,000-square-foot 15-screen movie theater complex in Northeast Philadelphia. General Cinema has not announced the cost of the project, but it is working with Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust. When completed the movie theater complex would employ 125 workers.
