A meeting was conducted in Philadelphia where 14,000 chemists met and discussed about various aspects, including topics of broad interest, such as energy research, health benefits of foods and the chemical origins of life. The meeting with chemists from academia, government and industry is expected to be the third largest in 2004 with $22.3 million in economic impact.

Tyco Company renamed the Dauphin County Company Tyco Electronics and slashed 8,000 jobs worldwide, which affected Central Pennsylvania by losing more than 2000 jobs. Despite of heavy job cuts Tyco Electronics benefited as Tyco allowed local executives to consolidate some far-flung operations and acquire businesses.
