Wired Singapore: island state finds the Net a two-edged sword

Article Abstract:

Ambivalence about the Internet reigns in Singapore, which has long fostered technological sophistication while repressing free speech and undesirable views. The Usenet group soc.culture.singapore carries a plethora of comment but little useful information, much of that critical of the government and society of the city-state. Singapore's official experience with the Internet shows censorship's limits for even the most technologically advanced. However, Singapore has tried, even raiding individual accounts for pornography.

Net assets

Article Abstract:

The Internet and particularly the World Wide Web offer many benefits to the business user, though most are incremental rather than spectacular. Better and faster communication is the first advantage, with electronic mail functions allowing rapid communication of text and graphics, often computer-formatted, with a record automatically kept of each transaction. Highly targetted marketing is another benefit, as is information access and rapid research. Ultimately Asian businesses can ill afford not to master this tool.

Nothing but net

Article Abstract:

Home pages on the World Wide Web section of the Internet offer businesses inexpensive exposure and marketing opportunities, though profitability remains elusive and hard to measure. They are most attractive to firms with high costs for existing facilities, or to those already involved in the Internet in some fashion. They also can be a convenient way to share rapidly changing multimedia information - for example, travel publishing dealing with Asia's fast-moving market.
