Welcoming the new order

Festive events are lined up to mark Hong Kong's turnover to China. Parades, parties, concerts and cultural performances will be held in many of the territory's areas to mark the end of colonial rule. Many of the customs and practices in the territory are expected to remain while government administrative procedures are expected to follow those of China's mandate. Rules on foreigners working in Hong Kong are likely to follow China's handling of foreign visitors, with numerous trips and long waits in the processing of documents.

Cathay's skies look brighter

Article Abstract:

Cathay Pacific Airways is predicted to recover from a dismal showing in 1996. Analysts expect an improvement in the airline's performance by late 1997, although immediate revival in the stock market is far-fetched. Changes in fuel prices and better relations with China are expected to help the carrier. Cathay Pacific's shares decreased by around 9% over 1996 to HK$11.75 in the period ending Mar 21, 1997. Revenue in 1996 rose by 28% to HK$3.81 bil owing to a temporary boost and a tightening of the budget.
