Germany has elected a new chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, and he is likely to be welcomed into the European Union (EU) where only Spain still retains a conservative government among larger EU members. Germany is also the most populous and richest EU member, and German opinion is important in the EU. A large amount of EU business had been awaiting German elections, such as reform of the common agricultural policy. Preparations are also needed for new members to join the EU from eastern Europe.

European countries have agreed to lift their ban on British beef if the UK accelerates its plan to destroy all its cattle. The European Union has agreed to help pay the costs of an accelerated plan. The British public's confidence in eating beef will not be restored until the European ban is lifted.
