Article Abstract:
Pope John Paul II is to make his fourth visit to Mexico between Jan 22 and Jan 26, 1999. Relations between Mexico and the Vatican have not always been very harmonious, and Mexico also has a long history of conflict between the state and the church. Many Mexicans are eagerly anticipating the Pope's visit, but he will probably not have a very significant impact, even though he will talk about poverty and social problems. Publicity about his visit has focused on efforts by the church to have it sponsored by businesses.
