War and memory: Cambodians confront the legacy of the Khmer Rouge

Article Abstract:

The Khmer Rouge is again a legitimate participant in Cambodian politics as a result of the UN-backed Paris peace accord signed in Oct 1991. Out of political expediency, the government foists a sanitized official version of the Khmer Rouge period that lays the blame entirely on Pol Pot while ignoring the role of the Khmer Rouge. However, Cambodians are unsatisfied and are convinced that the only way to come to terms with the past is to unearth the historical truth and mete out justice to those responsible for Cambodia's tragedy.

Long out of print

Article Abstract:

Cambodia's printing industry has slowed down with the drying up of paper supply from the former Soviet Union. The Pracheachun Newspaper, the only daily, brought circulation down to 5,000 from 24,000. Books for students are sorely lacking, and private lending libraries carry mostly hand-copied novels rented by the hour. Yet, even with adequate paper supply, the industry is not expected to pick up significantly because the best of Cambodia's writers and journalists did not survive the Khmer Rouge period.

Joining the fray: collapse of LDP sees female politicians entering the race

Article Abstract:

Women have played a very small role in Japanese politics since the World War II, a period that has been dominated by the pro-business Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The disintegration of LDP's monopoly on power has encouraged Japanese to enter the national political scene. One of these women is Mitsuko Watanabe, a former community activist who is running a grassroots campaign for parliament.
