The acquisition of Thananant Finance and Securities by Finance One in Feb, 1992, could eventually make the company one of the top 10 financial institutions in Thailand. Thananant Finance and Securities, renamed Thana One, handles all eight services offered by Thailand's finance and securities business and has a seat on the Thai stock exchange. However, the large amount of non-performing credit in Thana One could pose problems for Finance One, although Finance One Pres Pin Chakkapah is optimistic that these loans can be recovered.

Thailand's largest cement company, Siam Cement, posted a 41% drop in profits in Jan-Mar 1993, while two smaller cement companies saw their profits rise. Siam City Cement's net profit climbed 107%, while TPI Polene's net profit had an almost as impressive 70% increase. The chief reason for this difference is not that Siam Cement is less efficient than its smaller competitors but that it is writing off the depreciation on a new plant while the other two are not doing so for their new plants.

In the pink: Thailand's orchid exports blossom

Article Abstract:

Thailand has become home to the foremost orchid growers in Southeast Asia because of its climate. Its Dendrobium orchids, which are especially popular in Japan's orchid market, can flower more frequently in one year than the other varieties. Although the demand for orchid exports continues to grow, orchid growers are faced with the need to breed new orchid varieties and to develop new markets in the US and Europe to ward off would-be competitors.
