The prolonged stock market downturn in Japan has hit the insurance industry even harder than the nation's banks. Insurance firms' unrealized gains fell by 61% in the fiscal year ending Mar 31, 1992, while banks unrealized gains during the period declined 53%.

Slow growth of premium and low interest rates will reduce the investment income of insurance companies. Property and casualty insurers are have cut premium rates 25-30% since 1987, in an effort to increase premium income.
