Undone deal

Article Abstract:

Malaysian authorities are in a difficult position following United Engineers Malaysia Bhd.'s (UEM's) purchase of shares in its parent company Renong Bhd. UEM obtained exemption from making the legally-demanded general offer on the remaining Renong shares. The deal attracted public disapproval and the share prices dropped. The authorities have suspended trading while they consider a solution, bearing in mind that Renong has political connections, that the deal would be difficult to unravel due to the stock price fall, and that minority shareholders could suffer.

A cut above the rest

Article Abstract:

Malaysian-born doctor Gurcharan Singh invented the Tara KLamp to make ritual circumcisions fast, cheap, painless, and bloodless. Operating on the principle of cutting off the blood supply to the foreskin, it permits non-invasive surgery with little chance of contamination. It won a gold medal at the International Inventors Exhibition in Switzerland and retails for $14 in Malaysia, versus a surgery cost 20 times as high. Islamic law requires males to be circumcised before puberty.
