US resurrects satellite trials

Article Abstract:

The US Federal Aviation Administration has again revived its free flight program after the US Congress did not authorize the agency's budget request for the project. Now known as Safe Flight 21, or SF-21, the program will employ the same avionics to evaluate Free Flight concepts. SF-21, however, has major differences with its predecessor, Flight 2000. Participants in SF-21 now shoulder much of the program's cost and the partipation of general aviation is nominal.

WAAS costs continue to escalate

Article Abstract:

The GPS Wide Area Augmentation System is being reviewed by the US Congressional Aviation Subcommittee due to the escalating costs of its development. The purpose of the Congressional hearing was to answer concerns over cost overruns and delays in Jun 2000. The subcommittee's chairman John Duncan has warned that if Raytheon cannot deliver a viable system, the Federal Aviation Administration should find a contractor who can.

WSI has unveiled a new version of its PilotBrief online weather data service, called Vector Dispatch. The new system has been designed as a turnkey weather/flight tracking and flight planning data source for regional airlines. With Vector Dispatch, users have access to weather data, including WSI mosaic radar and satellite imagery, area forecasts, severe weather watches and warnings, and center weather advisories.
