Article Abstract:

Tung Chee-hwa, the newly elected leader of Hong Kong, apparently had the backing of China and he shows every indication of being a highly conservative advocate of the Chinese ways. One of Tung's primary tasks will be to offer reassurance during the coming Chinese takeover.

Patten's gamble

Article Abstract:

Gov Patten has angered top Chinese officials by pushing for greater democracy, particularly in Legco, the Legislative Council. Hong Kong will revert to China in 1997 and will be an autonomous region, but the degree of that autonomy is in question. Patten must be firm.
